How Paul Teaches

For school subjects, he reviews past performance and previews future assignments. For past assignments, he carefully analyzes the student’s performance based on the assignment, the grade, and especially the teacher’s comments. He then the student on how to satisfy their teacher’s requirements and rubric. For current and future assignments, he works with the student to thoroughly understand the requirements and expectations and then helps them revise their work.

For writing contests and publications, he guides the student through a systematic, proven process. First, he and the student decide on a big list of contests and publications. For each contest and publication, they analyze past winners. These pieces provide the ultimate examples of what the judges have appreciated and awarded. He then helps the student generate creative and insightful ideas to explore in a variety of categories including critical essay, flash fiction, personal essay & memoir, poetry, screenplays & scripts, short story, and speculative fiction. Then, at last, the student writes, and Paul guides the student through many, many revisions until the deadline.

For the SAT Reading and Writing section and the ACT English and Reading sections, Paul coaches the student to achieve his dream score through a proven process. First, the student takes a diagnostic test to assess his level. Then, Paul analyzes the student’s weaker areas and targets those areas for practice through drills. The student then continues to take practice tests and do drills, over and over until he/she achieves his target score. Throughout this journey, Paul teaches the student every concept and technique needed to score high. Perhaps most importantly, Paul never fails to believe in and encourage the student to keep trying even if the scores stagnate.

For college applications, Paul counsels the student on how to write winning essays and describe activities in impressive ways. He has carefully studied applications that have earned students admission to Ivy League colleges and Ivy Plus schools, and therefore he knows what the admissions officers want. Through his guidance, many students have gained admission to some of the best colleges in the country. For the main essay and supplemental essays, Paul first teaches important principles and analyzes example essays to help the student understand the nature of the personal statement. Paul then helps the student generate many ideas and narrow down the possibilities. Finally, the student writes and revises again and again until the personal statements demonstrate his passion, character, and accomplishments in the best possible light.
